FUEL Innovation Design & Manufacturing

From an Idea to a Manufactured Product

You have an idea for a product and a real problem to solve, but no engineering behind it, no sense of what it will cost, and no clear path from a sketch to something you can actually make. FUEL is a one-team, one-roof product development firm in Calgary that builds from exactly that starting point: an idea becomes a costed concept, then a designed, prototyped, and manufacturable product, without the inter-team handoffs that delay the project and disrupt design intent.

You’re starting with an idea

You might have a sketch, a problem statement, or a clear vision and nothing built yet. The hard part isn’t the idea; it’s everything between a sketch and a shipping product: is it feasible, what will it cost to make, and what does the path actually look like? That uncertainty is exactly where ideas stall. Founders, researchers, and domain experts with a problem worth solving, especially in the scientific-instrument world, start here.

What we discover & define for you

Every engagement starts at Discover & Define, and for an idea that means defining it from scratch: turning a problem statement into an engineering specification, not picking up a partial design. We start with a requirements conversation, run a feasibility and material-cost/trade-off investigation, and produce a concept design and a project proposal. You come away knowing whether the idea is buildable, roughly what it will cost, and what the path looks like: the de-risking groundwork that turns a sketch into a buildable spec before anyone commits budget to it. If it isn’t feasible, we tell you then.

Then the full path

From there the work runs the full path, end to end, weighted toward no single stage. The engineering and design teams work in parallel under one roof: Engineer & Design produces the manufacturing outputs your product needs, then they’re collected, assembled, and tested in-house at Prototype & Validate, with trusted partners for tests that need specialized facilities, and on to Manufacture & Scale. Every engagement runs Discover → Engineer → Prototype → Manufacture; starting from an idea simply means the most groundwork happens up front, at Discover & Define.

Capabilities this draws on

Building from scratch draws on every discipline under our roof: mechanical and electrical engineering, software and firmware, and in-house manufacturing carry the concept from requirements to a manufacturable design and on to production. Because it all happens in one place, the idea moves from feasibility to a finished product without being handed between firms.

Proof, no names needed

A founder came to us with nothing but a sketch for a portable environmental-monitoring device and a clear problem to solve, with no engineering and no sense of cost. Discover & Define built it from scratch: a requirements conversation, a feasibility and material-cost/trade-off investigation, a concept design, and a project proposal. From there the full path ran: the engineering and design teams worked in parallel, we assembled and tested the prototype in-house, and the concept became a manufacturable, tested product.

That’s a representative engagement: a composite of real work, anonymized, not a single named project. We’ve built products from the ground up many times: since 2018 we’ve delivered 200+ projects for 50+ clients, and there are more projects than clients because they come back. The pattern, not any one result, is the track record.

Your work stays yours

Sharing an idea before it exists is an act of trust, so we protect it from first contact. Mutual NDAs are standard before you tell us anything substantive, you own all the IP through assignment or work-for-hire, and formal information-security practices keep your concept walled off from everyone else’s. If your idea is protectable, the same partner who has managed IP portfolios at technology companies can help you think that through early. Because engineering, design, manufacturing, and validation all happen under one roof, your idea and its IP aren’t scattered across a chain of subcontractors. Our work is developed under a quality management system pursuing dual ISO 9001 / ISO 13485 certification, currently at the pre-audit stage, and we run every project under it, not just medical devices.

Frequently asked questions

I only have a sketch. Is that enough to start?

Yes. Discover & Define turns the concept into requirements, a feasibility and cost/trade-off read, a concept design, and a project proposal.

Will you tell me if my idea isn't feasible?

Yes. Honest feasibility and scoping come before any build.

How is my idea protected when I share it?

NDA from first contact, and you own all the IP.
